Flexibility, the word order of the labour market for many years, for the young people and not only. A word that evokes, in theory, scenarios, optimistic, in which the worker is able to migrate from one sector to another, to update, broadening their skills several times in the course of life, making it the painless way to a changing reality, in which the solid is a mirage.
The word that instead of – in practice this hides the inevitable difficulties involved in every process of updating and, most often, a real inability to change their profession into something new but, most of the times, cut off by a market that is year-on-year, aided by the Italian economic situation international and, increasingly unstable.
Very often the young fans of numismatics wondering whether it is possible to abandon their employment and some to dedicate himself totally to his passion for coin collecting, cataloguing, for example in museums or part of the distinguished academies.
Between saying and doing, however, especially in the numismatics Italian there is a difference almost unbridgeable: the shows, in the commercial sector, the small number of firms that take the place of those who, for reasons personal or business, close their doors and show, in the field of research, the difficulties faced by graduates and phd students – with some exceptions – in numismatics classical, or medieval, a profession.

For those who, by self-taught, approaching with a commitment to the history of the currency, the path becomes even more of an uphill. It is not often, in fact, that a museum or a collection of medals you exercise in a systematic way outside, if not in the case of scholars recognized, such as, for example, are called to investigate or catalog sets specific exhibits or to act as consultants in the preparation of exhibitions and.
Be hired on a permanent basis and work with the materials without a curriculum, then, is almost unthinkable. Those who love the coin, however, should not be discouraged: even though it fails to become a numismatist full-time, his passion, thanks to the collecting and study – may allow, however, to give the industry a important contribution.
Could, first of all, joining a national association such as the Società numismatica italiana or Numismatici italiani associati, thanks to which extend the circle of his acquaintances – both personal and cultural – receiving new ideas, collaboration and, why not, “straight” on the possible positions and career prospects.
You may then write a few articles for magazines, to organize an exhibition or educational activities with their own club, so get busy to take the pulse of the industry coming out from your “shell” of a simple collector. Will need a bit of commitment, but maybe he will be repaid.
In all honesty, however, we do not advise to deceive anyone with vain hopes: in Italy, living numismatics is very difficult, a little to the small size of the sector, a little to the commitment that the profession of the numismatist, in all its forms, requires.
It is a commitment to economic investment, first of all, for those who want to start a business, a commitment to the academic, for those who choose to dedicate themselves to public heritage and a cultural commitment, finally, for well-acting in both of these categories.
